Brave the canyon of chain restaurants that is Doral and you'll find honest-to-God homemade Middle Eastern food at Zeitoun. The name is Arabic for olives, and the cuisine at this 12-table restaurant owes much to their earthy Mediterranean flavor.
''We love olives,'' says general manager Samira Atallah-Marino. A Colombian of Palestinian descent, she opened Zeitoun last year with her mother, Teresa Atallah.
Mom ''dreamed of having a restaurant all her life,'' says Atallah-Marino. ``She's remarkable.''
So is her food. Zeitoun offers half a dozen to-go combos including a huge shawarma sandwich ($7.45). Grilled chicken or beef (or lamb, for $1 more), cucumber and tomato are dressed with a tangy yogurt sauce and encased in a chewy white or whole wheat wrap.
The specials come with a soft drink and a side like rice tossed with inch-long strands of angel-hair pasta. For $1.75 more, add a cup of superb lentil soup. The soup alone is $2.25 with a terrific, soft pita.
Pitas are a must with the best-selling sampler platter ($14.95): hummus, baba ganoush, kibbe, tabbouleh, stuffed grape and cabbage leaves and almond rice (rice with ground beef or shredded chicken and nuts). Or ask for the meatless version.
Zeitoun offers a number of rarely seen Mediterranean entrees like the wonderful tayhen ($11.95), layers of ground beef and potatoes topped with creamy tahini, thinly sliced onions for sweetness and tomatoes for tang. Add the belly dancing on Saturday nights and Zeitoun is a real find.
