Chef Sean Bernal

By Fred Gonzalez

Sean Bernal is on quite a journey.

The executive chef of The Oceanaire Seafood Room has joined the crew of ships such as The Time Bandit, one of the vessels featured on the Discovery Channel's The Deadliest Catch. He'll be braving the treacherous waters of  the Bering Sea in Alaska through Oct. 28.

The restaurant, located in Mary Brickell Village, sells more than 1,000 pounds of fresh fish a week. Fans of The Deadliest Catch may want to make a reservation soon because Oceanaire has purchased 40,000 pounds of Alaskan king crab from The Time Bandit.

We caught up with Bernal before he made his way out west.

What are your hoping to get out of your trip to Alaska?
“My expectations are not to become seasick. I don't want to embarrass myself too much. I just want to meet those guys and tell them thank you for providing such a beautiful product and risking their lives every day just for me to serve it to my guests.''

What led you to become a chef?
“To be honest, it came from my family and my mother. She is one of the best cooks I know. Reason I say that is when I was a kid she would let me peel the potatoes and stuff and she never pushed me away from the kitchen."

Where do you get your inspiration?
“It comes from my background. I have a Latin kind of touch. Very Caribbean. But then again I was trained in a French restaurant, so you can see some European touches in there as well.''
